2010 Arctic Winter Games are coming to Grande Prairie!
The City of Grande Prairie will soon become the stage for the 21st Arctic Winter Games. The Arctic Winter Games are a unique sporting event, as they include not just the ‘traditional’ sports as seen in the Canada Games and the Olympics, but also traditional Inuit games, Dene games, and dog mushing. Events at these games include badminton, basketball, gymnastics, hockey, snowshoeing, the one-foot high kick, the knuckle hop, snow snake, and the stick pull (just to name a few).
Participants in the Arctic Winter Games are from communities North of the 55th parallel, with past contingents travelling from Alaska, Greenland, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Russia, Northern Scandinavia, Northern Canada, and the Yukon Territory.
Over the years, these games have grown beyond just sports, with cultural exhibition and social interchange now playing a major role in these games. In addition to athletes, each delegation also brings a group of cultural performers to share their traditions with other parts of the world.
These biennial games have been hosted in the Yukon, Alaska, Quebec, Fort McMurray, and most recently celebrated their 20th Anniversary right where they began, in Yellowknife, NWT.
And now, the City of Grande Prairie has been chosen to host this spectacular showcase of sport & culture. Join us from March 6-13, 2010 for this circumpolar celebration of youth, sport, culture and dreams.
The City of Grande Prairie is proud to be a main partner and sponsor of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. To date the city has committed $630,000 to the 2010 Arctic Winter Games and has also promised a sizable gift-in-kind involvement.
